Micro-Alloy Steels are not generic in nature, but must be specially designed for the end application. To optimize the use of microalloy steels the applications engineer, component manufacturer and steelmaker must examine the requirements for performance, the process route of production and the steel recipe. Examination of certain applications will illustrate that selecting the appropriate micro-alloying strategies is important for the selected method of manufacturing production and ultimately the performance of the component. When micro-alloy steels are substituted for quench and temper applications the comparative properties becomes even more critical to the long term performance, warranty, safety and economy of the application. Some of the micro-alloying techniques available from the steel producer will be described.
