The reliability of undersea sensor systems has improved with network technologies such as advanced protocols, optical components, and architectures and requires operational lifetime in excess of five years. Protocols and interfaces such as RS-232, Ethernet, and IP (Internet protocol) help in fulfilling the demands of these sensor systems. The RTP (real-time transport protocol) provides video and audio data over the Internet and is compatible with modern computers and networks. Full-duplex switched Ethernet can be deployed on sensors to provide reliability and fault tolerant features like redundant power supplies, redundant fans, and temperature sensors. Precision timings required by sensor networks can be provided by NTP (Network time protocol), WDM (wavelength division multiplexin), and IEEE-1588 PTP (precise timing protocol). These new technologies, components, and standards are helping to building better ocean systems that can provide critical information on environmental monitoring and disaster warning.
