Annually, as part of the automotive painting process, thousands of tonnes of atomised paint are captured in spraybooths across the global industry. This captured overspray and the sludge resulting from its treatment and consolidation, represents one of the industry's largest waste streams. The piant sludge handling system consists of specialised consolidation and dewatering equipment designed to minimise the amount of oversprayed paint while maximising the solids fraction of collected and consolidated overspray. The remaining sludge contains 5-50 % solids (paint and process chemicals). Of the remaining 50-95 %, approx. 95-97 % is water and 3-5 % painting solvent. The DryPure II system processes the sludge coming from the dewatering devices. The environmental, economic and quality impacts of this waste stream are significant. Management is critical. Haden Environmental Corp. (HEC) has developed, in partnership with DaimlerChrysler, an overspray recycling programme that eliminates environmental liability through cost effective recycling and process management.
