This paper focuses on the concepts of drowsiness, fatigue and inattention and the objective measurement of these processes while driving a vehicle. The major aim is to point to factors that are important in order to develop effective countermeasures against these human problems, including systems that continuously asses the driver's state and the quality of driving, which record online biobehavioural data of the driver and vehicle-based performance data. A selection of recent works on the efectiveness of the various types of countermeasures being studied is provided. One should be most cautious when drawing final conclusions about the effectiveness of the countermeasures, for several reasons. Firstly, in most cases the countermeasures were studied under more or less constatnt specific conditions. We see this as a limitation for the generalisation of the results, because the relevant factors in a real environment (traffic, road, wheather, etc.), may produce a grat variety of situations and these may also vary considerably over time, notably changing the demands on the driver. On the other hand, studies aimed at evaluating countermeasure effectiveness must also control personal factors (age, experience, skills, personality variables) since it is demonstrated that they also modulate inattention, fatigue and drowsiness while driving. In spite of this, such personal factors have been excluded from the design of many studies, given that small samples have been used in general. If we focus on monitoring and detecting systems for drowsiness, fatigue or inattention, the evaluation of the systems' effectiveness poses a number of additional problems. To be actually useful, the systems need to be validated. They must also be reliable, practical and accepted by drivers. All such qualities must be demonstrated both in the lab and in real traffic situations, and for both cases under conditions adding to the development of the processes.
