This paper describes the latest achievements in the development of Crash Durable Structural Adhesives meeting most of the recent requirements of the car industry. The know-how build up during the development of this new generation of CDAs allowed to tailor quite exactly the basic properties to the needs of modern car's design without compromising the excellent crash performance, and to cope very well with the stringent development time demands for the design of new car models. The following summarises the achievements as described in detail: The viscosity is adjustable to such low values, that sophisticated application methods like jet streaming become feasible. The impact strength is tailorable, thus allowing the formulation of CDAs and semi-CDAs. The strength values at low temperatures, even at -40 deg C are remarkably high. The open time of the adhesives between the application curing in the ovens is improved from 2 to about 4 weeks. The glass transition temperature can be increased in dependence of the degree of the elastification to about 105 to 130 deg C. Impact strength- and modulus values are not compromised. It is even possible to increase the glass transition temperature and to optimise the low temperature impact strength values, while keeping the modulus and elongation an the same level. Future development will see improvement regarding the performance and processability of two part OEM adhesives, the optimisation of the elastification for the use of high- and ultrahigh-strength steel grades and will see further approaches to the simulation of real crash scenarios.
