The presented numerical analysis results of crashworthiness characteristic shows inadequate consideration on crashworthiness aspects of the existing railway vehicles. The results shows buckling occurred on middle-underframe structure, which is passenger area (approximately 10 m from contact point in longitudinal direction). For 60 km/h contact velocity, after 0,02 s from collision, structure absorbed 0.67 MJ energy with involving 330 mm deformation. Maximum deceleration reached 34 g with peak contact load of 14,300 kN. Vehicle collision will cause passenger suffer due to deceleration as a result of collision inertia effects In order to improve crashworthiness characteristics of railway vehicle, two type of modification are proposed. First modification is by weakening the end-underframe section (especially centersill and side sill modification) and strengthening the middle-underframe section. These modification provide a better deformation characteristics where passenger area structure are not suffered from buckling and plastic deformation as expected. The energy absorbed reaches 0.65 MJ with involving 230 mm deformation. To improve the energy absorption, second modification is proposed with full modification on end-underframe. This modification shows great improvement in absorbed energy. Thus, some modification should be conducted on railway vehicle design to improve its crashworthiness characteristics.
