As a fundamental component in railway signalling systems, the track circuit plays a critical role for train detection, and hence train control, throughout the world. The fundamental principle of the track circuit is that the two running rails and the train wheel-set form part of an electrical circuit. This leads to a simple and fail-safe system for signalling purposes, as any discontinuity in the electric circuit will cause the signal current to drop in the receiver (i.e. force the track relay to be deenergised) ensuring that upon failure the track section will be shown as being occupied. The track circuit is the most commonly used component for train detection in railway signalling systems throughout the world. However, one of the main drawbacks of the track circuit is that it is difficult to maintain and diagnose upon failure. The ability to provide condition monitoring of railway track-circuits is paramount to improving the reliability of train services and reducing maintenance costs. In this paper, an architecture for track circuit fault detection and diagnosis is proposed. Track circuit modelling is also discussed through the use of a transmission line model. The results of the analysis of data collected from a lab based FS2550 AF-JTC (Audio Frequency Jointless Track Circuit) test rig is shown. A comparison between the experimental results and a computer-based simulation is presented, providing validation to the track circuit modelling technique. Finally, the paper introduces an approach to condition monitoring for track circuits based on artificial intelligent techniques.
