This paper is aimed at studying the dynamic characteristics of the shift event of dual clutch automated layshaft transmissions. A simulation model integrating the engine, the transmission and the vehicle environment has been built using Matlab/Simulink software tool. The main focus has been analyzing the gearshift event at wide open throttle conditions. Mathematical equations based on Newton's Second Law form the basis of the DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission) dynamic system modeling. The intent has been to create an integrated engine-driveline system model and simulate the behavior of the DCT in events like a WOT (Wide Open Throttle) upshift or downshift. The challenging area of a DCT shift controller design is the modeling of the clutch control logic. The importance of the timing of the clutch apply and disengage pressure signal is explained in this paper. To understand the effects of timing, three different clutch pressure profiles are modeled and the resulting output torques are analyzed. As the incoming clutch reaches its critical capacity, the offgoing clutch pressure must become zero to prevent the clutches from fighting with each other and resulting in a harsh shift. In conclusion, it can be said that a quick and detailed analysis of the DCT shift characteristics can be performed using the equations presented in the paper and the model developed in Simulink environment.
