The marine industry needs to develop and utilize safe, reliable, and cost effective motion control systems for marine craft to significantly enlarge marine operations. The most basic form of marine craft motion control is related to the ability to accurately maneuver along a given path. The concept of path following entails the separate construction of the geometric curve and the dynamic assignment where the main objective is to follow a path. A complete motion control system for a marine craft involves three levels of control, which are low, intermediate, and high. The path following concept appears as the most favorable for motion control systems, providing accurate and safe maneuvering of marine craft. A mathematical model, which captures the essential dynamic behavior of the vehicle, is required to design advanced motion controllers for marine craft.
