Significant advances made in the field of Terahertz Imaging have captured the attention of many applications including industrial NDE, biomedical imaging and homeland security. The NASA spray on foam insulation (SOFI) inspection is one such critical application were Terahertz imaging is used to detect disbonds and delaminations between SOFI and the substrate metal (external tank). This paper discusses modeling aspects of the high frequency inspection system. The feasibility of using a simple ray-tracing model is studied. An approximate method, based on ray tracing model, was used successfully to model Terahertz imaging technique for low dielectric materials such as SOFI on metal substrate. Results comparing the model and experimental signals show good comparison. With accurate lens profile and input pulse shape a more realistic model can be attained with reliable results. The model can be used to optimize the imaging set-up to detect specific defect varieties. Also, the model can be used to identify features for defect detection and thus aid in the development of efficient signal and image processing algorithms.
