The authors have discussed an experience in the automatic instantiation of generic control rules for railway interlocking systems expressed using the statechart formalism by means of specific self made support tools and commercial tools (Statemate). The instantiation process was inspired by a SNCFRFF experience carried out inside the Eurolnterlocking project, and the process has been applied to some Italian interlocking examples. The experience has concentrated on the realization of a formalism that permits to use the statechart language in a generic way so that a lot of work dedicated to redesign new stations could be reduced. The possibility of reimport of the instantiated model to Statemate so that to perform a model checking on the whole instantiated model (closed development lifecycle) has not yet been completely investigated at the time of writing this paper. The ability to perform simulation and model-checking on the instantiated statecharts is important when considering the possibility of automatic generation of code. Indeed, in the process of developing a RIS, the generic statecharts on one side and the track layout and control table on the other side are taken as a trusted source of information by the developer, since establishing their completeness and consistency is responsibility of the client railway company. An experiment with a large station is planned as the next work, as soon as actual layout data are made available. Another direction for next work is to apply the proposed instantiation to a different kind of control rules which are associated to distributed railway interlocking systems, where control rules are deployed all over the layout.
