The MARC-1 (Modular Amphibious Research Crawler 1) ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) is designed to operate underwater and in surface zones to a depth of five meters and can be operated from a distance of 165 meters. This vehicle is devised for surveying, water sampling, and environmental data gathering in the surface zone using a video inspection system. The design features of MARC-1 include a 6061-T6 aluminum tripod powered by two independent AC (alternating current) electric motors allowing for forward/reverse motion and direction changes. The navigational instrumentation on the vehicle includes an inclinometer with a three axis compass connected to GPS (global positioning system) to give the inclination of the MARC-1 at definite distance intervals. MARC-1 will survey the biological habitat and chemical composition of the waters associated with artificial reefs along the Florida coasts to gather scientific data to support current resource and environmental investigations.
