To respond to the strong demands that are being made worldwide to counteract global warming in automotive industry have been putting forth great efforts to reduce CO2, etc. After long years of technological developments of the DPF and NO(x) catalyst, the Diesel Particulate NO(x) Reduction system (DPNR) was introduced into the world in 2003 as the key technology for the catalyst systems of the near future. This system simultaneously reduces NO(x) and PM, as proven by field trials performed on a large number of trial vehicles. This paper provides an explanation for the strategy of direct injection diesel technology to which Toyota ascribes, and describes a newly developed 2.2-liter, direct-injection diesel engine. This engine incorporates the DPNR (which has been refined with improvements based on development knowledge acquired through field trials) with new technologies such as low compression ratio, high boost pressure, piezo common rail system, high rail pressure (180 MPa), etc. With the large number of possible technology, it can be realized to maximize power performance and zeronize exhaust gas and CO2 emissions at high levels. The combination of piezo injectors and low compression ratio is an extremely effective technology for realizing a higher power output and cleaner emissions. While stricter emission regulations are being considered for the future, the DPNR is not only an effective means for cleaner emissions, it is also an effective means for realizing a higher power output.
