The purpose of the project reported in this paper was to develop the 2nd Generation of Visteon's VTES electric boosting technology. The paper provides details of the various stages of the Visteon development of a high performance electric supercharger resulting in a second generation design (VTES) conceived to address the inhibiting factors associated with the earliest systems. It is illustrated how the objectives to combine low cost, mass, package volume and noise with high performance and 12V compatibility were achieved. The paper also shows how VTES (Visteon Torque Enhancement System) can be configured to deliver significant functional benefits for naturally aspirated and turbocharged Otto engines as well as turbocharged Diesel engines. The vehicle level benefits are illustrated through the inclusion of experimental results relating to products targeted for launch around 2008 model year. Then the system developments for Generation 2 are described: 1. Motor design, 2. electrical system design, 3. compressor design. Generation 2 test results are outlined concerning: 1. Thermal performance, 2. system cost, 3. aerodynamic performance, 4. system mass and volume, 5. system transient response, 6. noise and vibration, 7. vehicle test results.
