A new automated system, called the FerryBox-Module, has been developed by the GKSS (Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Kernenergie in Schiffbau und Schiffstechnik) Research center, the Institute for Coastal Research, and -4H-JENA Engineering GmbH to provide automated observations of coastal waters and estuaries by ships of opportunity. The module allows a system to be protected against harsh conditions, the prevention of biofouling, easy maintenance when a ferry comes back, and transects yield much more information than point measurements. The system contains a seawater intake, a debubbling device, and a main loop with sensors for temperature, salinity, pH, oxygen, turbidity, and algae abundance. It can cost-effectively deliver reliable high frequency data, and improve, and optimize conventional monitoring strategies. The self-cleaning features guarantee reliable long-term measurements and low maintenance cost. Furthermore, the applicability of the system helps in a better understanding of the marine ecosystems and the underlying hydro-physical process in the marine environment.
