The paper reports on recent trends in crashworthiness (CW) and High Velocity Impact (HVI) substantiation of helicopters and transport aircraft (A/C) by means of numerical simulation with explicit crash and HVI codes. The simulations are used to support concept, design, and certification phases. First, extreme impact loading on A/C and helicopter structures is discussed, including a justification for crash and HVI resistance and needs and motivation for increased future use of crash and HVI simulations in aeronautics. Various aspects of passive safety comprise modelling of energy absorbing (EA) behaviour of composite materials and structural CW concepts, HVI loading of composite aircraft structural components, the water impact environment of helicopters and ditching behaviour of A/C, the interaction of the occupant with the crashing vehicle as well as support of certification routes by simulation.
