A preliminary design of Vehicle Control System (VCS) for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle has been developed. A prototype controlled module is developed. In order to make the VCS practicable, it is identified and allocated into different function levels. Three functional levels are suggested: main control level, subsystem level, and actuator/sensor level. This paper presents main control level mainly. It contains a drive interpreter, vehicle motion control, energy management and shifting process control. At last, the bench test results and computer simulation results are employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design. The on-line test will adjust the parameters of VCS in order to reduce fuel consumption and emission.
