Current developments demonstrate growing international interest in the use of hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles and vehicles with hydrogen internal combustion engines. The main drivers behind this are the needs to further lower the specific energy consumption, to meet CO2-emission targets, and to diversify the primary energy sources used to produce fuel for transportation. A vital factor for the success of these activities is the development of high-performance hydrogen storage systems, which -taking into account today's efficiency rating of fuel cell cars and vehicle package for tank installation - allow the storage of approx. 4 kg hydrogen to guarantee a driving range of more than 300 km. Based on the knowledge and experience gained to date with the various storage technologies, the automotive industry increasingly favours high-pressure storage as the preferred technical solution, which, because of the low physical density of hydrogen, requires gas compression up to 700 bar. Dynetek Europe as well as the Ford Research Centre in Aachen participate - among other partners - in a 3-year project with the aim to develop a 700 bar compressed hydrogen storage system, i.e. a storage cylinder along with all the necessary peripheral equipment. Main emphasis in the project is placed on the objective that all single components being developed as well as the hydrogen storage system as a whole meet automotive requirements.
