The parameters of tractional motors for AC and DC electric locomotives depend significantly on the characteristics of the insulation systems employed. Modern Russian motor designs are analysed. The analysis reveals a tendency to greater thermal stability and to the application of monolithic and polymer film systems with stable electrophysical and technological properties. The steeping composition is capable of maximally filling the unavoidable cavities in the insulation material, even during heat treatment. Reducing the insulation thickness and increasing the thermal conductivity of the insulating materials improves the heat transfer. The characteristics of the mica tape and the steeping compound used in state-of-the-art insulation systems are given. Integral distribution functions of the electric strength of various insulation systems are discussed. The test results permit a comparison between the inital state and the state after travelling about 600000 km.
