In the last few years signal lamps got more complex and extravagant. The styling diversity permits the easy recognition of car type at day and night time. One of the new styling elements is light guide technology. Applications for light guides can be found in front and rear lamps. Light guides offer the opportunity to realize long but narrow-band contour lamps along the outer surface of the car. Besides the increase of efficiency the toughest challenge is the realization of uniformity. The authors analyse the specific parameters of light guides which an influence on uniformity. Due to the fact that these parameters influence also the light distribution, some solutions for good uniformity do not permit the fulfilment of the ECE- and SAE-requirements. While optimizing the efficiency of a light guide system the uniformity will often decrease and an increase of homogeneity is followed by a descent of luminous intensity. Therefore the design of a light guide demands always a compromise between uniformity and efficiency. Finding the optimum for the individual geometry is the challenging exercise. Furthermore it is important to check and optimize the ambient conditions for the light guide within the head lamp already in the concept phase. Very often the deficiency in light guide performance is due to the lack of space for the optimum position of the source. The positioning of the light source has a preponderant influence on the signal lamp construction and on the performance of the light guide.
