New legal requirements for headlamp, constructions are coming up to reduce pedestrian injury in case of accidents. This paper will give an overview on the technical backgrounds of the performance of environmental friendly mercury free Xenon HID lamps. Mercury free Xenon HID lamps (with and without integrated igniters) have been introduced into the automotive head-lighting market, driven by an increased concern for the environment from all stake holders in the car industry. This includes the end-users as well as new environmental legislation rules. Ordered by public authorities, world wide mercury free Xenon HID lamps will take over an important part of the Xenon HID market in due time. Within this perspective the optimization of the complete system, the light-technical aspects and its influence of the bulb inside design are discussed in this the paper. Consequently this paper can be seen as a follow-up of the previous publications in HlD technology for automotive head-lighting. The mercury free Xenon HID bulb allows a continuation in establishing Xenon HID as the optimal solution to enable car headlamps being not only visual jewellery but also a technical and optical highlight. The combination of great luminance with a high level of lumen output leads to brighter beam pattern giving the driver the opportunity to see obstacles well in advance. Nevertheless, the mercury free version of the Xenon HID automotive lamp will evolve in future making its advantages over the mercury containing lamp in particular beam performance over life even more visible. Furthermore, mercury free Xenon HID bulbs for DRL, AFS like application, will become available in due time.
