Overhead presentation. The current EU road safety policy is constituted by: - road safety target: 50% less fatalities by 2010; - a road safety action programme: 'Sharing responsibility'; - a European road safety charter; - a European road safety observatory; - A substantial amount of money for research projects, grants and tenders, - transparency and stakeholder consultation, - legislation. The following targets should be in the agenda: 1. Enable more stringent EU legislation; 2. ensure political leadership, 3. integrate transport and health, 4.acknowledge the link between sustainability and safety, 5. get industry to take responsibility. One aim should be to killing speed by legislation, because excess or inappropriate speed is the single most important cause for road transport fatalities. Compliance with speed limits is generally poor across Europe. Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) reduces the average speeds and makes drivers comply with the speed limits. The ISA system is most effective in decreasing travel speeds on speed zones with 50km/h or more in the surrounding areas. If every vehicle is equipped with an ISA, the number of injuries in urban areas could be reduced by 20%. ISA with a supportive feedback system has very large potential to reduce fatal accidents by 59 %.
