Knowledge of rollover mechanics, which is required in heavy truck development, commonly relies on a static analysis, providing the steady-state rollover threshold, SSRT. In a rolling vehicle, kinetic energy is always present and that deteriorates the analysis of roll stability from SSRT and implies the need for a dynamic rollover threshold, DRT as a complement. DRT is in conformity with SSRT applicable to any vehicle model. Results from applying the Taguchi method to simulations of these thresholds of a rigid truck and a semitrailer combination, in which five parameters and their interactions are studied, show that the parameters influence the different vehicles unequally. A method to determine DRT is presented and a parameter sensitivity study is applied. The influences on SSRT and DRT, including interaction effects, from roll stiffnesses and roll centre heights, are calculated. Among the studied parameters, the rear axle roll stiffness and roll centre height are important to the rollover sensitivity of the vehicles. While they are the most important semitrailer parameters, the front axle stiffness is the most important on the truck. The frame stiffness is less important: a tendency that is most pronounced in the semitrailer results. However, the interaction effect of the front axle and the frame stiffnesses are noticable in DRT. In order to gain dynamic stability by increasing the front axle roll stiffness it is important to keep the torsional stiffness of the frame high. The other combination effects are negligible. Design changes can hence affect SSRT and DRT differently, which indicates that two vehicles can be equally stable staticaly but different dynamically. Therefore, if DRT is not analysed, a redesign of a vehicle can deteriorate roll stability even though it appears to improve it.
