The present work examines the structural response of tubular members subjected to lateral (transverse) quasi-static loading, in the presence of internal pressure. General-purpose finite element program ABAQUS is employed to simulate the indentation procedure of pressurized tubes. The analysis considers nonlinear geometry through a large-strain formulation, as well as inelastic effects through a large-strain plasticity model, with isotropic hardening. An algorithm that controls the indenter displacement is employed to trace the nonlinear equilibrium paths. Four-node reduced integration shell elements (type S4R) are employed for modeling the pipe. A parametric study is conducted to examine the effects of pressure level, as well as those of indenter size and pipe end conditions. It is mainly concluded that the presence of internal pressure increases significantly the indentation force. A simplified two dimensional heuristic model is also adopted, which yields closed-form expressions for the indentation force. The model equations are in fairly good agreement with the test results and illustrate tube indentation response in an elegant manner.
