A latest acoustic sensing framework has been proposed for the detection and tracking of sea bottom targets using acoustic sensors on AUV's (autonomous underwater vehicles) under the framework of GOATS (generic ocean array technology sonar) 2002. GOATS is a multi-disciplinary international research program, developed by the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's SACLANTCEN (Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic Undersea Research Center), which explores the potential of the latest technology for dramatically increasing the coverage rate of shallow-water MCM (mine countermeasures). The results of GOATS 2002 by the latest real-time framework show agreement on both the target location from side scan sonar and the navigation track of AUV from the LBL (long-baseline) navigation system. The framework has advantages such as low data processing demand, simultaneous target detection and navigation, low signal-to-noise ratio target detection, and buried target detection.
