The new generation of a cable propelled Automated People Mover System (APM) is currently under construction at Toronto Pearson International Airport, the biggest Airport in Canada. While access to the airport is already improved by converting the closest highway to a dedicated airport road, the new Toronto automated people mover system is designed to improve access and mobility within the airport itself. The 1.47 km (0.9 mile) long dual track shuttle system will connect the new main terminal Tl, the existing Terminal 3, and a new area of airport development (Viscount Station). DCC's (Doppelmayr Cable Car's) CABLE Liner Shuttle system for the Toronto Pearson International Airport is ideal for Toronto's harsh winter climate. As the trains are propelled and stopped by the cable, they do not rely on friction between tires and guideway for traction and can operate continuously during snowfalls or freezing rain. No guideway heating is required. DCC's light trains have rubber tires and a very smooth metal running surface, resulting in an extremely low-noise system. This is of particular significance at Toronto Pearson, where part of the system's guideway has to pass very close to an existing hotel. The APM system will have the ability to carry as many as 2150 people each direction every hour. The APM system is scheduled for completion in December 2005.
