In high-speed vehicles the contact/impact problem of hypoid gearing can become a bottle-neck problem. As hypoid gearing is a nonlinear dynamic system with parameter exciting and time-varying stiffness. 3-D mixed formula for contact/impact finite element analysis is applicable. In this paper, a loaded tooth contact analysis program is used to calculate the loaded meshing characteristics of hypoid gearing. The geometry of the tooth surface is determined from actual cutter specifications and machine settings. The tooth contact analysis (TCA) is applied to find the initial contact zone and the loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA) is used to calculate the load distribution of teeth. The FEM of the hypoid gear tooth is generated based on the TCA results. The finite element kinematical differential equation relating to the dynamic contact-impact problem is outlined. The finite element program of 3-D dynamic contact-impact problem is developed making use of the mixed finite element method, and it is used to analyze the 3-D dynamic contact-impact characteristic of the hypoid gear. The 3-D dynamic contact-impact numerical simulation method is used to simulate non-linear characteristics of the hypoid gear either the initial speed or the sudden load is applied to driving gear. the influence of the backlash to the impact force is analyzed. The dynamic contact force, impact velocity and dynamic stress are given at several load cases.
