The alternative formulation of the theory of gearing which does not need an early establishment of reference systems, is applied to model the grinding process of a real spiral bevel gear drive for aerospace applications. This new approach is deeply based on the Euler rotation operator R, representing a rigid rotation in a vectorial form of a point P around an axis a of an angle alpha. All the information collected about the geometry is employed to generate a finite element model capable of giving accurate results in terms of contact tractions and subsurfaces stresses during meshing. A description of the operating procedure follows to create and successfully run the model in a commercial finite element code (ANSYS) is given which allows to obtain accurate stress results with a reasonably low computing time.
