Renault targets a 0 part per thousand failure rate affecting safety or vehicle immobilization for the next generation of engine management systems. Given this high performance target and the increased complexity of engine systems, especially for diesel engines, new architecture concepts are required to help improve software and system design and validation. In this paper the authors explain how the architecture concepts are defined for specification and how they help address validation and documentation issues, before the software implementation. The architecture is based on atomic elements: the modules. These modules are organized following a framework: the static architecture. Their dynamic behavior is modeled in a dynamic architecture in order to prove that the software will properly trigger the system components. It is then explained how these modules are linked to pieces of code that may be reused (like the modules). In a last section the verification and validation techniques available are addressed.
