Each winter, spectacular pile-up accidents due to lack of visibility in fog areas generate injuries and death. A permanent on board visibility sensor is the alternative. But it is strongly difficult to design such a device if the measurement is not achieved directly into the fog itself, mainly because of air disturbance around the car. This paper describes how to add in a car a system able to evaluate the front visibility, including fog conditions, thanks to the video signal of a multipurpose camera and an image processing into a vision-controller, already developed for detection functions like Lane Departure Warning or Automatic High-beam Activation. In order to reduce bad consequences of fog, Valeo is developing a sensor using a front multifunctional camera, able to evaluate the visibility distance. The installation is easy between the windshield and the rear view mirror, and permanent optical transmission is achieved thanks to wipers. According to this arrangement, the effective cost of the application is split by the number of combined functions. The camera does not require specific modification; only the image processing inside the vision controller has to be adapted to the size of this complementary function. This system can easily be embedded, at low extra-cost, into a vision-controller also used by other detection applications, and using a single front multifunctional camera. Some functionalities of those applications, as Automatic Main-Beam activation are used to improve the quality of fog detection. The attitude of the car has to be taken in account for keeping a satisfactory accuracy.
