The upper section of the valley traversed by the River Rhine, as it passes through the central part of western Germany, is unique as a landscape and as a heritage site and was added to UNESCO's world-heritage list in 2002. Since 1862, the railway has been part of this cultural landscape. As the railway lines wend their way along the narrow valley floor, at the foot of steep slopes and cliffs with heights of up to 300 metres, measures to protect them from falling rocks are as old as they are. The frequency of landslides and rock falls has increased since the winter of 2001/02, and so Deutsche Bahn Netz AG, which, as infrastructure manager, its responsible for safe railway operations, has arranged for all the steep slopes along this part of the Rhine Valley to be investigated and expertly appraised. This has resulted in a packed catalogue of proposed measures. In deciding on implementing these measures, what is now decisive is to strike a judicious balance between the factors of safety, nature conservation, the heritage landscape, engineering solutions and value-for-money.
