The suspension system plays an important role in the safety driveability of a vehicle. To maintain the system in correct safety conditions it is necessary to know its performance during the life of the vehicle. To do so, a vibrating platform test bench is curently being used, but the test method and validation criteria are not reliable at present. This kind of test bench is made up of an electrical motor that moves a cam. The cam transmits the movement to a platform on whose top one of the four suspension columns of the vehicle is located. The force between the wheel and the platform is measured by a force sensor installed on the platform during the frequency decreasing phase. In this paper a new test method and validation criteria have been suggested, based on determining the damping coefficient of a shock absorber through a vibrating platform test bench. The component that has most influence on dynamic behaviour of the suspension system is the shock absorber. This component will progressively deteriorate through the life of the vehicle and because of that a non safety driveability behaviour could be made. Suspension system status could be achieved by vibrating platform test bench checking. Characterising the dynamic behaviour of the suspension system in the vibrating test bench is sufficient to excite unsprung mass resonance. A 'Limit Damping Coefficient' as validation criteria has been established, below which the dynamic behaviour of the suspension system demonstrates an outstanding loss of performance. Computer model results have been confirmed by experimental test with enough accuracy to validate the hypothesis obtained by the mathematical model.
