In the year 2000, Ducati Motor Holding launched on the market the model 'Mike Hailwood Evolution', which was equipped with a rear swing arm realized in carbon steel. The weight of this component was 7,5 Kg. Two years later, R&D department started to study a way to realize a rear swing arm with a framework made in alumium alloy in place of the one in carbon steel. To get to the final configuration of the swing arm mounted on Ducati Monster S4 R we have considered a lot of different technical aspects: materials, heat treatments, stress relief methods, welding techniques, etc. The experiments carried out on this component permitted to achieve a method that shall be used to study every welded structural element of the motorbike. The most important objectives reached with this study are: Optimization of the geometry of the zones which fail during the reliability tests (particularly the welding profile and the suspension connection) and appling automatic mig welding technique to assemble a part of the swing arm (the front body to the extruded arm and the extruded arm to the back ring). Focusing the attention on automatic mig welding process now used for standard production, we can compare its performance with the ones of manual tig welding technique used until few months ago. Using tig manual technique we need 22 minutes to weld the front body to the extruded arm and the extrude arm to the back ring; both joints need to be executed in double pass to reach the correct penetration. Now, with mig automatic technique the welding time is 2 minutes 38 seconds and we are able to produce a piece in less than 5 minutes (included the time for charging and discharging the component from the mask). At the present, a study to weld even the framework with automatic mig welding is going on.
