The new exhaust emission regulation proposes three possible scenarios for limiting the output of the exhaust gases for the 50 cc engine class in the two and three wheeler vehicle applications. The first scenario is lowering the limits about 30 %, the second and third scenario are proposing the implantation of the cold start characteristics. The cognitions of this publication are dealing with the evaluation of these three scenarios and enable insights in the behavior of different engine concepts during the warm up phase. Two different engine concepts, 2- stroke as well as 4-stroke, have been analyzed and both show potential to be a future proof technology in appliance with proposed scenarios. The low production cost representative, driven by a 2-stroke engine with carburetor, showed respectable results, dealing with the proposed regulations. With application of improved mixture preparation systems, for example electronic carburetor, appropriate cold start strategies and with improvement of the exhaust gas after treatment, will this engine concept be able to meet the new regulations. High sophisticated and cost intensive direct injection 2-stroke engines show the best performance characteristic of all tested vehicles with respectable low emission level, which makes this engine concept very interesting for performance related customers. The cold start emission behavior should be improved to make this engine concept future proof. The vehicles, driven by carburetor 4-stroke engines, only can be utilized in the future, if the optimization of this engine concept can lead to a lowering of the CO output, but at the same time stay competitive on the market with the acceptable performance characteristics. Fuel injection 4-stroke engines will be able to meet future emission regulations, due to the possibility of an improved control of the engine management system. In general, only engine concepts equipped with catalytic conversion systems will be able to fulfil more severe future exhaust gas emission regulations, but the possibility to apply closed loop controlled fuel injection systems in combination with three way catalytic conversion systems gives the 4-stroke technology advantages in comparison with 2-stroke engines.
