Diesel powered passenger cars have made significant progress in the past few years. The Common Rail System (CRS) is a new technology for fuel injection systems that has revolutionized diesel engines for trucks and passenger cars. Denso has been continuing work in CRS technologies since it produced the world's first system for trucks in 1995. In 2002 Denso created a CRS featuring an 180 MPa of injection pressure. This paper describes how Denso drew on its technology to improve engine output by raising the injection pressure to 200 MPa and met stricter emission regulations through a simple and innovative Group Holes Nozzle concept. The observed spray performance results and simulations demonstrated that the Group Holes Nozzle widens spray far more than conventional nozzles, provides strong penetration and ensures a homogeneous lean air-fuel mixture. In engine tests comparing the performances of both nozzle types, it was found that only the Group Holes Nozzle can simultaneously cut NO(x) and PM. The analyses of this phenomenon in combustion observations confirmed that quasi-premixed combustion leads to low temperature consumption. Based on this knowledge, the tests of two- and three-litre engines showed that it is possible to suppress PM enough to meet EU4 regulations while cutting NO(x) emissions cost to future emission regulations.
