Nowadays multiphase steels are used for structural parts in automotive application to reduce weight while increasing strength. In addition, stiffness has been increased despite markedly reduced thicknesses by refining production and construction techniques. During operation structural parts undergo different time-dependent stress and strain states. This can reduce the endurance lifetime. Through the application of numerical methods for lifetime estimation, e.g according to the local approach, structural parts can be assessed on the basis of the condition of the material. To develop a car body which is optimized for crash behavior both constructional and material aspects have to be considered. Thus, the knowledge of dynamic and cyclic material properties is necessary. As dynamic tensile tests with high strain rates have to be carried out, the measurement and testing technologies have to fulfil the highest demands. Right now there is a lack of standardization in the field of cyclic and dynamic tests, so consistent guidelines for those tests are in progress to enable the comparison of the results from different testing laboratories world-wide. These activities continue in different research projects and working groups mainly between the steel industry and its automotive partners. Resulting from these projects comprehensive databases have been developed with special links to FEM tools in order to satisfy the demands of automotive development.
