A concept three-wheeler vehicle with parallel electric hybrid system meant for the Asian market has been developed for passenger application. The major objective of improving the fuel economy, matching the performance to that of manual gearbox along with automatic transmission operation is achieved. In this paper a brief description of the intended vehicle specification is given. In order to develop a control strategy for a parallel hybrid system with an E-CVT it is necessary to define the complete operating range of the vehicle. This can be achieved by using drive cycles that are statistical scales of real operating conditions. With the vehicle intended for city driving conditions, the standard Indian Drive Cycle (IDC) is selected for the design and analysis of the control strategy. The transient power requirements of the vehicle are initially matched using IC engine and the E-CVT combination, with any fall in performance assisted with electric hybrid system. The concept vehicle is modelled in one of the commercially available dynamic simulation software. It can be shown that the hybrid electric vehicle has 35 % more acceleration capacity than that of manual gearbox for full throttle acceleration and almost double the capacity during transient operation.
