The inherent fuel economy benefits of diesel powertrains over gasoline offer significant potential for reduced energy consumption and provide vehicle manufacturers with a viable method of improving Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE). However, achieving the stringent NO(x) emission levels of upcoming LEV II and Tier 2 standards, while retaining low fuel consumption and satisfying consumer demand for higher performance, presents significant technical challenges. For diesel powertrain to succeed in the US light duty vehicle market, manufacturers must apply engine and exhaust after treatment technologies which meet the technical demands within a viable business case. This paper outlines the trends in advanced electronics and controls for diesel powertrain and the role of these technologies in enabling diesel as a viable fuel efficient option for the US light duty vehicle market. The application of mean value based modelling within control strategies, together with improved feedback control from lambda and/or NO(x) sensing will be applied for initial US Tier 2 diesel applications. Further advancement in closed loop control from cylinder pressure based or ion sensing feedback, with real-time in-cycle model elements, will facilitate further reductions in engine-out NO(x) emissions. This will allow thrifting of NO(x) after treatment, and will provide improved adaptive control to compensate for component tolerances limited by cost or manufacturing feasibility.
