The challenge for GM is in meeting the very diverse requirements within and across the geographic regions of the world. Clearly, the IC engine will continue to be the primary source of motive power for the next 30 to 50 years. Gasoline engines will get much more sophisticated with technologies such as variable valve actuation, direct injection and variable displacement. Many of these features are already available on premium specification engines but even lower cost 'value engines' with these features over the next 10 years are to come. Diesel engines will continue to get even more complex with variable valve actuation and advanced turbo-charging with the most significant developments in the area of combustion and after-treatment systems. In the near-to-mid term, new developments will continue in the area of hybrids, with significant improvements in fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Over the next 10 to 15 years, hybrids will develop a significant presence in most market sectors and regions, particularly in North America. This will extend its life well into the longer term. It is likely that the hydrogen economy will develop and evolve over the next 20 to 40 years with associated rapid advances in fuel cell technology. Once efficient, affordable fuel cell vehicles become available and once the hydrogen infrastructure is formed, the IC engine will go into decline. There are still some important technological breakthroughs required to enable these developments ensuring a continued life for the IC engine. Through all of this, electronic control systems technology will continue to evolve. This has been the key enabling technology for the past 30 years of IC engines development and will continue to be in the future. The introduction of hybrid vehicles is increasing the complexity of systems and increasing the control burden. This also be the case as fuel cell vehicles come online ensuring the importance of controls technology into the long distance future.
