QinetiQ, based in the UK, has developed a Gambit mine reconnaissance fully autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for taking the challenge of gathering and delivering information on sea mines. The company has developed and integrated high-performance synthetic aperture sonar (SAS), advanced vehicle autonomy, automatic target detection and classification (ATDC), and automatic communication system onboard the Gambit vehicle. The sonar sensor on Gambit provides high resolution and long-range capabilities, and the sonar with ADAC processing provides real-time, in-mission information from the vehicle. According to the mission goals, contacts are ranked using prioritization algorithms and the information is transmitted over the acoustic communications link. Gambit is capable of producing SAS imagery out to ranges of 210 meters, with resolutions of 50 millimeters. The autonomous navigation solutions minimize the reliance on external sources such as global positioning systems and acoustic positioning systems, in the precise determination of the contacts. The command control and mission management (CCMM) system developed and integrated onboard Gambit provides real-time autonomous decision making, ensuring achievement of the mission goals. This remote system has completed a number of successful fully autonomous missions, undertaking mine reconnaissance activities.
