Passive safety is already very advanced in today's road vehicles. But if the current trend of fewer accidents with fewer fatalities is to continue, we need to introduce active safety, i.e. systems that support and off-load the driver while driving. Active safety requires environmental sensors. Sensing the current situation around the vehicle is the key to enhancing road safety. Various sensor principles can be used, such as radar, LIDAR, ultrasound or cameras. Global data can also be provided, for example, via GPS. Some applications have already been implemented, for example, LDW, ACC or lane-changing assistants. The accident statistics tell us that these systems will make a noticeable contribution to safe driving because certain classes of accident can be prevented. The future market for these systems will be worth about 2.5 billion Euros by 2015. It is expected that by this time 50% of full-size cars and 10% of midsize cars will be fitted with this type of system. This development will be reflected positively in the accident statistics.
