Commonly used design methods of impellers of working area geometry of automobile hydrodynamic elements are not accurate. There are, therefore, differences between the assumed construction criteria and actual power train characteristics. The mechatronic design has been developed in order to decrease this discrepancy. Mechatronic design is defined as a creative process where the development of new equipment applies multidisciplinary knowledge such as mechanics, instrumentation, controls, electronics and computer science. This design process can be used for the development of hydrodynamic power trains in automobiles. The hydrodynamic power train contains hydrodynamic elements (HE) such as torque converter, clutch, brake and mechanical part. Power train characteristics including efficiency are determined mostly by the impellers working area geometry. The scope of mechatronic design of hydrodynamic power train in automobiles includes the following: mathematical modelling and optimisation of HE working area, impeller prototyping, automated testing of these prototypes and prototype corrections. In this paper conception of mechatronic design of impellers working area is presented. In order to realise this conception a test rig for testing HE impellers has to be constructed and supported by expert system software.
