The knowledge of the accurate value of the rotor time constant is essential to the FOC method used to control the induction motor. In electric vehicles, controlling the induction motor in the point of minimum losses vs. maximum torque output must be the first priority. The rotor resistance estimation method based on the comparison of the reactive power of the motor itself and of a model which is implemented in this application is well known. However, especially at very low speed some improvements are presented in this paper providing a fast and accurate estimation of the rotor resistance. An optimal induction motor drive using vector control technique is proposed. Optimal efficiency, fast rotor resistance adaption and correct torque production of the induction motor especially at low speed can be provided by implementing three items: current (d-axis current, q-axis current) adjustment with rotating speed and torque for providing optimal efficiency; considering these optimal currents within the weighting function to the adaption algorithm estimating the rotor resistance; accurate converter linearisation.
