Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has been around for quite a while in the field of research. As the concept and technology have grown in maturity, it is now time to make it operational, and get its expected benefits. Aircraft structural airworthiness certification is based on load and fatigue margins, with which it is demonstrated that original design margins, periodic overhaul and on-event inspections guarantee safe flight operations, However, airlines and manufacturers are looking for improved performance, cost savings in fuel burn and maintenance, calling for new approaches. Research has stated that significant benefits would be obtained if SHM were introduced in the original design of the aircraft. Nevertheless, different features can be introduced requiring less effort and benefiting locally to various cost segments. The key to success is to define a system tailored to the SHM requirements, providing solutions at a cost as justified by the expected benefits. Micro-Nano- Technologies (MNT) have the potential to offer such solutions, cost effective and reliable. One must allow the SHM and MNT communities to meet and specify jointly the new SHM system. MNT solutions certainly include distributed sensors, featuring local data processing and transmission. This architecture is further integrated in order to provide an aircraft level diagnostics. This SHM system helps the maintenance operator make the decision and dispatch the aircraft to flight service, or eventually diagnose failed parts. In future aircraft design, when system reliability is demonstrated, the same system will permit reduced certification margins. It is through a progressive system implementation of technology and procedures that confidence in the SHM technology will be obtained.
