A pulse-generation technique to minimize the development of lead sulfate layers on negative plates of VRLA batteries subjected to HRPSoC duty was developed. The method enhances the reliability of 42-V PowerNets in modern automobiles. The technique involves the application of sets of charging pulses of different frequencies. It was found that the life-cycle performance of VRLA batteries is enhanced markedly when dc pulses of high frequency are used.
