Maintaining appropriate levels of disc-pad interface temperature is critical for the overall operating effectiveness of disc brakes and implicitly the safety of the vehicle. Measurement and prediction of the distribution and magnitude of the interface temperature are notoriously difficult, because of the structure and composition of the material of the pad and the complexity of the pad-disc frictional sliding contact involving wear, thermal distortions and the heat flow from the interface. A methodology for transient thermal brake pad modelling has been developed using Finite Element (FE) techniques and is presented in this paper. The overall loading of the model reflects the experimental settings, and random distributions for real pad contact areas (pad regions where the bulk of the kinetic energy is dissipated), are implemented. Factors influencing the magnitude and distribution of interface temperature, such as interface contact resistance, heat partition, the ratio between the apparent and real paddisc contact area (contact ratio), the shape of localized contacts and the pattern of the real contact areas (cluster factor), are discussed. The importance of modelling interface contact resistance at the braking friction interface is reinforced, and it is recommended that further research is carried out to investigate this and the correlation between maximum friction surface temperatures and the contact ratio, shape, and cluster factors.
