When developing overhead contact line systems and assessing their conformity simulation of the interaction with the pantographs is not anymore dispensable today. The tools used for simulation must model flexibly and precisely all parameters of the contact line and deliver findings, which correspond reliably to measurements of the current collection quality. Simulations adopting the finite element method comply with these requirements and, due to the high capacity of computers available today, can be used advantageously to study the interaction and other features.
