Details of transient eddy-current inspection were first published over ten years ago, however the ideas that led to this technique date back much further to a programme of basic research into eddy-current imaging. The spin-off from this programme has led to several developments in eddy-current technology underlining the essential role of fundamental research as a means of gaining insight into the solution of practical inspection problems. The conceptual development of transient eddy-current inspection is reviewed and evaluated here in order to determine whether or not this technique has the potential to make a significant contribution to NDE. Resulting from an extensive programme of research into eddy-current NDE, it has been possible to present a generalised framework that can be applied to a broad range of eddy-current NDE applications. All eddy-current techniques can be defined in terms of a number of characteristic features and fitted into the generalised framework. After reviewing the influences of recent technological advances, several specific transient eddy-current inspections have been addressed with their associated spin-off technologies - Eddiscan for cracks from fastener holes, TRECSCAN for cracks and corrosion in multi-layered aerospace structures, and TrecGauge for corrosion in steel under insulating layers. In addition to these, there are many applications for eddy-current inspection that have yet to be fully explored in terms of the potential advantages of using transient eddy currents. Given this fact and the recent successful incorporation of TRECSCAN into commercial scanners such as the Boeing MAUS system, it seems quite safe to predict that transient eddy currents are set to stay in the NDE world for several decades to come.
