We are developing a novel GPR system for stand off landmine detection. This is a bistatic GPR system, which uses a TEM horn antenna for a transmitter and a passive optical electric field sensor as a receiver. A small size passive optical sensor is scanned on the ground surface and the acquired signal is used for synthetic aperture processing. Since the receiver is very small, it is suitable for scanning on the ground, where landmines can be buried. Fundamental laboratory test shows its imaging capability of the buried objects. Using the advantageous features of the sensor, we are testing the imaging of landmines in various antenna configurations. We have adopted a newly developed wide-band system which can work up to 5 GHz and discussed the experimental results.
