This paper presents the work carried out for the demonstrator of the WirelessCabin project. An overview of the system architecture is given and then the work focuses on the aspects of hardware and software implementation. In particular the following solutions are presented: (i) how GSM mobiles can be allowed to roam into a local network onboard an airplane without interfering with terrestrial providers; (ii) how the access to the onboard network (and eventually to the Internet) is regulated for Wireless-LAN (WLAN)/Bluetooth users and how authentication and accounting are performed; (iii) what kind of crew communications are enabled; (iv) management of the satellite connections in terms of handover and Quality of Service (QoS). This paper is based on the work carried out in the Project IST-2001-37466 WirelessCabin, which is funded by the European Union.
